The four-time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey has died from cancer. He was 52.

Father Mackey's kennel announced the news of his death in a Facebook post on Wednesday

Mackey was was diagnosed in the year 2001 with throat cancer. However Mackey went on to win four consecutive Iditarod races between 2007 and 2010.

He also became the only musher to win both the Iditarod and Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race
