Kelly Clarkson and Dolly Parton Release a New Version of Classic Hit “9 to 5”

Dolly Parton and this weeks Variety Cover Star Kelly Clarkson collaborated to create a new version “9 to 5,” ahead of the documentary “Still working 9 to 5” that premieres Sept. 16. They teamed up with Shane McAnally and Sasha Sloan, the film’s executive producers, to create a new version of Dolly’s hit “9 to 5,” ahead of the documentary “Still Working 9 to 5” that premieres Sept. 16.

Gregg Berry produced the original “9 to 5”, written and recorded by Dolly Parton. It debuted alongside the 1980 film of the name, starring Jane Fonda, Parton, and Lily Tomlin. It received an Academy Award nomination as Original Song, and four Grammy nominations. Two of these were for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

Parton said, “Nobody sings as Kelly Clarkson.” She can make any song come to life. She is a wonderful singer and I’m so happy that I was able to sing along with her on 9 to 5. Shane McAnally’s amazing arrangement and production are equally impressive to me.

Clarkson says, “It was an honor to be asked by Dolly to reimagine the iconic song, ‘9 to 5’ with her!” She is a true inspiration and one of your most sweetest friends. I hope you like what I did. But even if not, I was able to perform a duet alongside Dolly Parton, and I now have bragging rights until the end of the world!

Shane McAnally, producer, says that it was a dream to work with two world-famous singers on one the greatest songs of all time. This classic, 40 years after it was first charted, has been rearranged and co-produced by my friends Sasha Sloan, King Henry and me. I am so happy to have been a part of Dolly and Kelly’s first recording together. It won’t be the first time it will happen.”
